About The Ministry of Justice Kogi State

Introduction

The Kogi State Ministry of Justice was established in the last quarter of 1991 upon creation of the State. The first Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice was Mrs. Rekiya Okpanachi.

The current Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Muizudeen Y. Abdullahi SAN. As a first step towards driving initiatives, and in line with the state government agenda in the justice sector, the Attorney General has put in all efforts possible towards developing a logical framework and activity/strategic plan for the Kogi State Ministry of Justice.

The Ministry is decentralized into 8 Directorates and headed by 8 Directors while the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary is the overall administrator and chief accounting officer of the Ministry. The Ministry plays a significant role in upholding the rule of law, protecting citizens’ rights, and promoting justice in the state.

A state where Rule of law is entrenched, and all persons have unfettered access to justice, guaranteed protection of their fundamental rights.

.Provide effective access to justice, enforcement of Rule of law and ensure promotion and protection of fundamental rights.

CORE MANDATE OF THE KOGI STATE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE

Every unit and department in the Kogi State Ministry of Justice is saddled with various objectives to ensure smooth running of the ministry for the purpose of serving the public. Among its core mandate are:
  1. To advise Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and Government Corporations on legal issues pertaining to the day-to-day execution of their duties.
  2. To draft laws and agreements, to which the State Government and any of its agencies is a party.
  3. To offer advice to law enforcement agents on whether or not to prosecute criminal cases.
  4. To resolve dispute to which the state is a party and other domestic issues.
  5. Securing and retaining skilled and motivated State counsel and supporting staff which the state already did in early 2017 by employing 150 law officers to aid administration of justice and create peaceful and lawful environment for profitable business transaction.
  6. To supervise the operation of the 1999 Constitution within the State.
